Volunteer Spotlight

Last year, more than 600  volunteers helped Volunteers of America Oregon's dedicated employees to serve over 17,000 people in the Portland metro area.  Here are the stories of just a few of the hundreds of individuals who give of their time, talents, and effort to help us make a difference in the lives of so many:

Lis Sonsalla works with the youngest survivors of domestic violence -- children. “These kids don’t know that not everyone throws things when they’re angry,” Lis says.  But five years of volunteering with children’s support groups at Home Free has taught her how to be an extraordinatry child advocate.  Click here to read about what Lis has learned.

Kathy Wooten has been volunteering at the Marie Smith Adult Day Center for 15 years and has become an indispensable part of the vibrant community there. “I’ve really enjoyed the time I’ve spent volunteering here,” Kathy says. “The staff has created such a wonderful and caring atmosphere. It feels like a sanctuary for me.” Click here to read her story.

Nancy Fandrem finds purpose and a community by helping out with clerical projects, data entry, and wherever she is needed at Volunteers of America Oregon's administrative offices. She enjoys both the company of friendly faces as well as working to support the efforts that help so many.  Click here to read her story.
